I had hip Labrum arthroscopic surgery four weeks ago,the stabbing pain has gone but I m more disabled,it is very painful to stand ,rise from sitting, keeps me awake ,pills don t help the pain, the surgeon told me I would need total hip replacement in a year or two as it was bone to bone ,the amount of arthritis Justifys total hip replacement,my concern is why didn t the surgeon do that ,instead of the Labrum surgery, should I find another dr.im 74 yr old ,active female.i am confined to my down stairs bedroom. Stairs are differcult to hop.should I give it more time,I m thinking I need the total hip replacement soon thanks carol.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

1) The pain post-operatively is relatively normal, but pain persisting four weeks thereafter is a little unusual. You should take the rehabilitative physiotherapy very seriously.
2) Your surgeon probably felt that the arthroscopic procedure would be a good intervention at the time to postpone the need for a total hip replacement. Besides the cost involved, the rehab is as intense.
3) I dont think you need to change surgeons, but you should definitely get him to address your pain issue,

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
