Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dear Dr, I have lived w/pain in my left knee all of my life. Is knee replacement my only option as I get older? I take no Med: only ice pac & heating pad. I just turned 70. Only do walking and stretching; go down stairs backwards for speed ; walk up the correct way. Have given up running and kneeling in church.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Your symptoms point at knee osteoarthritis. As you are 70, pain medicines are to be used with caution especially if some kidney or liver issues exist.
You can have Paracetamol for pain relief.I would like to throw some light on knee replacement surgery. In our institute, we have done 10,000 knee replacement surgeries.
I have followed more than 2,000 people after surgery. They are very happy to be able to lead a painless life.
The range of movements of knee joint is considerably better in such a way that they are able to walk fast. The quality of life has improved. So, if your pain is so bothering, you can go for knee replacement. Continal knee joint or quadriceps strengthening exercises are to be done without fail.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pallavi M.
