How Can Severe Pain In The Left Arm Be Treated?

I have three bulging Disks that are pressing on nerves and causing severe pain in my left arm. I also tore my rotator cuff but 50% and had a stroke. They are unable to do any surgery at this time to repair the problems, due to the stroke. The Dr has put me on a couple of nerve pain medications. I slept through one of my doses and woke up with horrible pain in arm, breakthrough pain. I am being released from hospital and was worried about missing a dose and that horrible pain returning because the source has not been repaired. The dr decided to put me in dexamethasone injection to try and calm down the nerves. Originally the pain made my blood pressure shoot up to the point where I had the stroke. I am worried that a steroid will increase my blood pressure causing possibly another stroke. Does anyone know if it can do this? Or what the chances are?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Steroids do have anti inflammatory &pain relieving action on irritated nerves.. when injected locally. Steroid tend to retain water in body & thereby can raise blood pressure in some patient's but this can be prevented by regular monitoring of BP & adjusting blood pressure medicines accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
