How Can Severe Pain In The Lower Back And Leg Be Treated?
My friend seems to have sciatica; he has intense pain from his lower back all the way down his leg. He has tried tramadol with Tylenol (his doctor s over-the-phone suggestion) but they don t help. He is diabetic (well controlled) and has several stents in his heart. Would Neurontin/gabapentin reduce his pain?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Tramadol is usually used to treat pain caused from pinched nerve (sciatica) that is a moderate to severe pain. Gabapentin is commonly used as anti-convulsant (to prevent seizures) and to treat postherpetic neuralgia, and I don't recommend him to use it for this type of pain. In my opinion he can continue using Tramadol + Tylenol and he can also add Ibuprofen(three times a day) to the treatment, which helps reducing pain and nerve inflammation.
Hope I have answered your query.
