How Can Severe Pain In The Thumbs Be Treated?

I have been really bad, uncomfortable pain in my thumbs. my hands are weaker, sometimes my wrists hurt. the thumb pain is burning, sharp & intense, and different types of pain i ve never had. it is hard to explain the pain, but it goes all around my thumbs. they hurt mostly at the bottom along the side of my hand, and works it way up to the first (only!) knuckle. this has been going on for 6 months or so, and is getting worse. I ve planned on monitoring it, so I know what to say to the dr. but haven t started. I rub them, shake them, wear isotoner gloves for the warmth & tightness. i m getting really tired of it. thanx.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per my surgical experience, the issue of severe pain in thumbs indicates possible underlying nerve compression around wrist. I recommend to discuss the need of an MRI with your orthopedic doc for final diagnosis and management guidelines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
