How Can Severe Pain Under The Shoulder Blades Be Treated?

My 50 yr old son has been checked at ER and found nothing serious. But must continue pain meds or has severe pain in back just under shoulder blades, he says like lying down across and iron bar. It is less if he is up moving but severe (when pain meds are due) if he lies back or lies down. The ER said it was muscular-skeletal and prescribed the pain meds but that seems severe for muscle pain. By the way, he doesn t control his sugar very well and it was 430.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, this condition is called frozen shoulder and is most common in people with diabetes. He needs to control his sugar first.

Ask him to go to the doctor for insulin regimens. If sugar is under control then pathological processes gets retarded. Steroid infiltration is the best treatment for the frozen shoulder I have ever seen.

It's just daycare procedure and results are promising. You will get relief soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
