How Can Severe Stress Be Treated?

I have been under significant stress for sometime. Is there any non-habit forming med I can take to eliminate the stress, even mild relief would help. Walking would be good, but I live on a street with no sidewalks or areas to walk. Another problem is that I do not sleep well, because I cannot seem to shut my brain down long enough to feel relaxed.
