Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am experiencing sharp pain in my right ear, similar to the kinds of pain I recall as a young boy of 12 - 15 yrs of age. This is a contrast in age considering am now nearing 82 yrs old. I have lost hearing in this same right ear over the past 12 months. I would appreciate your opinion and advice , thank you Sir,
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are a few causes for the reduced hearing and pain in the ear. The most likely one and that is easy to be seen with a simple ear examination by the doctor is wax. If wax is building it may cause hearing to go down and to some point it gets infected and may cause pain. Please use olive oil 3 drops 3 times a day for 3-4 days to help the wax go out. If no improvement in 3-4 days or the pain is worse please see your doctor.
Other causes can be infection or other problems in the ear canal or behind the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and you will need to see a doctor to examine your ears with an othoscope and decide the proper treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
