My adult son just told me he has been diagnosed with Shingles on his rib cage. He was given an anti viral med to take but nothing else. He broke out three days ago. Is there anything he can use to sooth it otc? I have Silver Ointment but am wondering if there is anything you can suggest. I had it once and remember it is painful and itchy at the same time. Thank you for your advice. My email address is YYYY@YYYY
First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately.
Based on the history you have shared, your son may need a dermatologist opinion to start on acyclovir oral as well as topical alongside strict monitoring of renal functions and good hydration.
For pain OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used but if severe more potent analgesics like tramadol or gabapentin may be needed.
Duloxetine or carbamazepine can also be helpful with such severe pains. Local patches are also available but once rash is present not advisable.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
