How Can Side Effects Of Lisinopril Be Managed?

I have a friend who has amen Lisinopril for several years. A couple of weeks ago, he had a horrible reaction to the drug, was on a respirator 10 days and is now in a nursing home for rehab. He still is a long way from a recovery---he cannot feed himself. How common is this side effect?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It sounds like your friend may have had angioedema, which is a known and dangerous side effect of lisinopril.

This is a very uncommon reaction to lisinopril, so much so that I would want to make sure there was not any other cause that might be responsible.

I have prescribed and seen many patients on lisinopril and I have never heard of anything like this happening, but I have read that this can happen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
