Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have a sinus infection and cough that lasts more than 4 weeks and the past three nights has been really bad especially overnight (I have to sleep in a recliner). Yesterday my doctor prescribed me doxycycline hyclate and ProAir hfa for the cough. I am taking the antibiotic but still haven t started the inhaler - I ve never used one and I don t have asthma and the side effects sound scary, to be honest, especially the bronchospasm. Is it common the inhaler to be prescribed for a persistent cough that won t go away with any cough medicine?
Since, you have persistent cough since many days and having difficulty in breathing, most likely you are suffering from bronchitis.
The inhaler has been prescribed to reduce the inflammation in the lungs and clear congestion so that you can breathe easily. It is not going to cause any side effects when used for a short duration of time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nazma Amman
