Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 76 year old female who just finished taking azithromycin for what I thought was a sinus infection but which turned out to be an abscessed tooth. Last weekend I had f4 days of throbbing tooth pain and finally got in with an oral surgeon on Wednesday who extracted the tooth. He put me on clindamycin to start after I finished the azithromycin (I thought I recalled once having clindamycin for a serious throat infection). I am concerned about starting the clindamycin for the toll it might take on my digestive system as I have diverticulosis and also am lactose intolerant. The dosage he prescribed is 150 mg by capsule 3x per day. I have used a probiotic drink (Evita) to settle my stomach after cramping when I used live culture yogurt to restore digestive bacteria. Do you think I can manage to safely take this for 14 days? (I should add that I take only vitamins and no other meds. I have not taken anything for pain since Friday.
Infection has reached up to pulp and it can lead to bacteremia and septicemia so antibiotics is required to subside infection. You can take it and can complete course however along with this you should take probiotics, and yogurt in diet to avoid stomach upset and drink plenty of water as well.
I would suggest you to visit dentist/oral and maxillofacial surgeon once and get it examined completely and start treatment accordingly. You should go for IOPA that is x-ray of that tooth to check if that could be saved then go for RCT, otherwise take proper course of antibiotics and go for extraction. Maintain complete hygiene.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari

How Can Sinusitis And Toothache Be Treated?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. As per your query, you have symptoms of severe toothache due to dental abscess which is due to presence of infection.
