How Can Sinusitis Be Treated?

I ve had sinusitis - diagnosed in May. Had cough w/phlegm - a little yellow. Then still not well - doctor said it was also bronchitis - lots of coughing w/phlegm. I was given antibiotics both times, just in case, along w/cough syrup w/codeine. I m still coughing, and tired. The cough is now in my chest, but less often. Now I m supposed to be on a plane on Saturday for a 1 week vacation in St. Maarten. I m worried. I ve been resting - off from work on and off all of June & now into July, but clearly not enough. Concerned about going away now. I d hoped to get there and just lay on beach and get this baked out of me . I now have 2 days left when I can check in with my doctor here... Your thoughts?

Hi,

As per your history, you have chronic sinusitis which is sinusitis lasting for more than 12 weeks. What I do usually is to advice a CT of the sinuses to my patients, and if suggestive of sinusitis, advise them antibiotics.

If it does not improve, with the first line of drugs like Amoxicillin, I usually prescribe another class of antibiotics plus nasal irrigation and rule out other common causes of sinusitis like a fungal infection. If it is still resistant to treatment, then we advise surgery (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) which is very acceptable to patients and has got very good results.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
