How Can Sinusitis Be Treated?

I have been fighting sinusitis since a few days prior to Labor Day. I ve taken zithromycin and a pack of prednisone. I also use the Nettipot, have a humidifier in my house, Sudafed, Mucinex, Zyrtec, Singular, Patanase and a multi-vitamin. I ve seen my doctor three times. The first time I was given zithromycin. 4 days after completing it I went back because I wasn t any better and my lymph nodes were sore and swollen by then. I took 6 days of prednisone. I went back 3 days after finishing it and I m still tired (extremely hard time waking up in the mornings), sore chest & upper back between the shoulder blades, swollen and very tender lymph nodes, extreme facial discomfort and shortness of breath (especially if I walk up some stairs or talk a lot at one time). The nurse said my oxygen levels were good, along with other vitals. I have an on and off again low grade fever (below 100) but my usual body temp is 97.3-97.7. I have no desire to eat because when I do I feel more pressure in my chest and right below my sternum. A few nights in the past week it s been uncomfortable to sleep on my left side because it s uncomfortable near the lower portion of my ribs. This third time I visited my doctor she put me on Levaquin for 10 days...this is day 4. I haven t noticed any difference at all. Any suggestions on what I should next???

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

On the basis of the info provided it appears you are suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis. Long history of symptoms may make the things difficult as it can lead to formation of nasal polyps. As for as the treatment results are concerned I am of the opinion that you should go ahead for surgery. But here the skill and experience of the ENT surgeon should be inquired about. About recurrence issue --- I would say 60 to 70 percent of the patient do fairly well even after 2 years of surgery. For the rest they require some small operative intervention. The need of medicines drastically reduces after successful surgery. Then you can take it like this --- if you plan for surgery there are chances that you will have improvement but if you are not planning for surgery that means it will further worsen and you may need a bigger surgery after some time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
