Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 16 year old daughter complains of a sore throat and she has an unproductive cough. She stayed in bed all day yesterday but I sent her to school this morning because she did not have a fever. One of her teachers sent her to the office and they told her I should not have sent her to school but no one took her temp there. How go I decide when to take her to the doctor with these symptoms? And keep her home from school?
Your daughter has a sore throat along with cough which could be due to viral pharyngitis or upper respiratory tract bacterial infection. Need not to worry. I would suggest you do warm saline gargles or betadine gargles 2-3 times a day and start vitamin C tablet for ten days. Taking steam twice a day will be very important.
Usually, it takes three days for these symptoms to go. If symptoms keep on persisting, visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. The doctor may order a throat swab test along with blood test and treat accordingly. Keep sipping warm water. Drink hot milk along with a pinch of turmeric. You should take a combination of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
