How Can Sore Throat And Ear Congestion Be Treated?

Initially I had a sore throat & cough. Then my ear became plugged on 1/12/18 & pain developed. It has been plugged for almost 4 weeks. Urgent care dr said I had a severe ear infection on 1/13/18. Prescribed antibiotic, ear drops w/antibiotic & cough medicine. Pain was relieved fairly quickly but my hearing in that left ear is still impaired & at about 50%. Is this normal? Should I have it rechecked or will my hearing eventually return?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You seem to have developed acute otitis media. It may have happened as sequelae to your throat infection. Hearing loss occurs due to accumulation of fluid in the middle ear cavity.

It can be treated with the help of antibiotic ear drops and oral antibiotics. As your doctor has already prescribed it you should complete the course as advised by your doctor.

If it does not improve, then you should get yourself checked by an ENT specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
