How Can Soreness And Swelling On The Elbow Be Treated?

I slipped on an icy patch on wood deck and fell hard, landing partly on my elbow tip, also my tail bone. Am sore but can move my elbow just fine. The very tip of elbow is turning colors and is swollen. Painful to touch and painful to rest it on a hard surface. But I can move all my fingers, have a good grip, and can move my arm around. Years ago, I slipped on the ice and landed on my elbow, went to emergency room, and they told me I had a compression fracture that couldn t be cast. Just put into sling for a while.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Swelling, pain and discoloration can occur with soft tissue and bony injury so unfortunately, it is not possible to differentiate between the two using these symptoms/signs. If these symptoms continue or worsen, you would need an x ray to rule out a bony injury.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
