How Can Staph Infection On The Finger Be Treated?
My sister in law just called me and she is living in Costa Rica and has developed an infection in her finger. She went to a local doctor and to the hospital emergency room and they did a culture and came back and told her the test showed the presence of Staph, E coli and Klebsiella. They have removed her fingernail and gave her amoxicillin but it is getting worse. I am a pharmacist and she called me to ask what type of antibiotic I would recommend. I have not dealt with an infection containing all three of these bacteria and would like an opinion on what you would prescribe.

If this is Staph aureus, standard type then amoxicilin should be enough to cover it but ciprofloxacin would be better option if e.coli and klebsiella are present as well. If this is MRSA type of staph then vancomicin or linezolid should be considered.
