Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello,
Uncomfortable feeling in the stomach, constipation, metallic smelling and a history of previous gastrointestinal bleeding indicate chronic gastrointestinal bleeding.
First, you should get a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and a test for iron deficiency anemia. If FOBT is positive, and or you have iron deficiency anemia (IDA) it means you are having gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
The investigation should start with upper GI endoscopy. If upper endoscopy comes back normal, then colonoscopy should be done. If both tests are negative (upper endoscopy and colonoscopy), you should be investigated with capsule endoscopy to investigate for small bowel pathology.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Malik
