How Can Swelling Above The Knees Be Treated?

I tore my ACL 2 years ago and I played soccer again one time and heard another pop/crack. It did not feel like the ACL did when I tore it and I can still run and play but there are two things that bother me. It clicks on the front outside of the knee next to the knee cap and when I do certain exercises it gets swollen and it seems like there is water build up above the knee. what could this be?

Hello,

There are many ligaments in the knee joint like Anterior, lateral and posterior cruciate ligaments. If anyone is torn it can be differentiated by doing some simple tests.

But for now, I cannot test you for that. You can get an MRI so that you will know the exact location of the tear. If the tear is more, then it can be refixed with surgery. If not, then it will heal alone if left behind.

So, you can use symptomatic treatment if you have pain. Use any painkillers like diclofenac, paracetamol or tramadol temporarily.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
