How Can Swelling And Pain In The Ankle Be Treated?
I fell and twisted my ankle on February 18. After 2 hospital visits and one with my regular doc they discovered that I broke my navicular bone. I have been on best rest for a few weeks. I see my foot surgeon next week. But I am getting very concerned about my foot. It is still so swollen and tender that it can t be touched at all. The pain is starting to spread. Should I just wait a week to see my foot doc or should I go back to the hospital?
Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been standing or walking a lot. But the feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem.

When these valves become damaged or weakened, the blood leaks back down the vessels and fluid is retained in the soft tissue of the lower legs, especially the ankles and feet. Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to skin changes, skin ulcers, and infection. You should treat this with elastic stockings, keeping the leg elevated and in severe case you should see a vascular surgeon for further treatment.
