How Can Swelling And Pain In The Knees Be Treated?
My 15 year old son came home from school with knee pain from a collision in PE class. Apparently they were playing flag football and he was bending down to get the ball and other boy ran into him and his knee collided with the other boy s shin. It s swollen and he says it hurts on the outside of the knee, especially when moving it after a while of sitting down or when walking. I am icing it and gave him some ibuprofen. Anything else I should do?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Pain and swelling are common symptoms after knee injury. Taking ibuprofen, putting ice and rest are the first supportive treatments used, but the final treatment depends on the type and the severity of the knee injury. The collision might have caused a soft tissue damage, or a problem with knee meniscus, ligaments, sprain or strain. I suggest you to go to the ER and consult a doctor to perform a physical examination, X-ray or a RM to evaluate the injury and then decide the right treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
