How Can Swelling In The Lower Leg Be Treated?

I severely strained my calf muscle 10 days ago. I saw my doctor and had an MRI done. Nothing was torn, just a contusion. I am still having problems with my lower leg and foot swelling and it has been 10 days since I injured it. Is this to be expected? How long before the swelling subsides? I am elevating my leg as much as possible and keep it wrapped with an ace bandage. Should I continue this and for how long? Also, should I be applying ice or heat at this point. I would ask my doctor, but he is not in the office this week.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As you have undergone MRI and doctor opinion who has diagnosed it as 'contusion', thus without being able to examine you directly, I'm of the following opinion:

. A thorough examination by an Orthopedic surgeon is mandatory since mild bruise/contusion may heal within weeks but he can exclude any vascular [DVT, infection] cause of the same.

PS. The course of treatment will depend upon the cause of pain since if the individual does not seek treatment normal injury can become a long-term chronic problem.
