Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I fell on my knee rather hard two days ago. It immediately swelled up and I have a small bruise? I can walk fine and even climb stairs OK. It hurts bad if I touch one specific spot on the inside of the knee just under the kneecap. It s still swollen and feels tight and punches a bit when I first get up and put pressure on it. Should I go to the dr or will home treatment be enough?
The swelling and bruising in the knee is most likely due to hematoma formation in the knee due to the fall. It will most likely subside in one or two weeks.
If the swelling increases or there is restriction of and instability in the knee joint there is a chance of ligament or meniscal injury. In that case, you should get yourself checked by an orthopaedic surgeon who may advise an MRI of the knee joint.
Meanwhile, you should apply ice pack to the area. Take over the counter painkiller like Advil drug to relieve pain and inflammation. Support the knee with a knee cap.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nazma Amman
