Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Was bitten by a cat on the thumb by that evening thumb was swollen. Went to clinic and was given doxycycline 100mg. Took two for first two doses and now on second day of only one every 12 hours. Not running a fever. Thumb is still sore but not in so much pain today but it is still swollen. Should I go to emergency room if it is still swollen tomorrow?
Since the pain is reducing, it means that the inflammation of the thumb too is resolving. After such injuries, depending on the degree of injury, it would take 7 to 10 days for the bruising and soreness to completely resolve. You may please continue with the antibiotic for 5 to 7 days. Please keep the thumb dressed with neosporin or mupirocin ointment. please do not use the hand for strenuous work till complete resolution. Please do go to the ER, if the swelling and pain is not resolving or if it is increasing.
