I have had swollen tonsils for four weeks now and i finnally went to the ear nose and throat specialist the other day. She prescribed me amox-clav 875 for a two week dose of antibiotic. Problem is i have been taking the two a day dose since tuesday and have nit seen any change in the amount of white spots on tonsils or any change in swelling size. Should i stay on this antibiotic or is it not working if nothing has gotten better ?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Amoxiclav 875 mg is a first choice treatment for acute bacterial tonsillitis. You have to continue taking amoxiclav 875 mg twice daily, for two weeks. You can also take Ibuprofen 400 mg two times a day, for pain relief and antiinflamatory effect, for 10 days. If you don't improve after completing the treatment , you have to do a throat culture analysis, to determine the exact cause of tonsillitis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
