What Causes Swollen Tonsils?

I ve been experiencing swollen tonsils for over a week which comes and goes. I went to sleep tonight and woke up a couple hours with a swollen cheek lining lips and tonsils. Do I go to the ER? I drank some water no change not sure I can get back to sleep with my swollen mouth the back of my throat/tonsils swelled up.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have an inflammation in throat secondary to infection and it is leading to swollen tonsils causing Tonsillitis..
It can be either due to bacterial or viral throat infection..
As you have swollen lips also along with swollen lining of the cheeks, it can be due to infection only while can also be due to allergic reaction if you have taken any medicines like antibiotics for relief..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a throat swab culture can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin or Azithromycin, anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
You can gargle with warm saline solution..
You can chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..
You can avoid spicy and hard foods and take a soft bland diet with plenty of fluids..
Suck throat lozenges.
