How Can The Side Effects From Prednisone Be Treated?

About a month ago I had an angiogram and becasue I am allergic to the contrast dye the dr. prescribed prednisone and benadryl. The day after I started having funny bowel movements with alot of mucus. I have not had any relief now a month later. I am still having very frequent urges to have a bowel movent and will poop every time I urinate. Again this will be accompanied with mucus. What could the problem be?

Good Afternoon,

I'm sorry you are experiencing such symptoms. When you say Funny bowel movements what do you mean? Mucousy stool can be normal, however, excess amounts, particularly if associated with blood, pain, dark near blackened stool, and or increased frequency and urge movements, may be a sign of something more pathological (i.e. infection, inflammation, chronic disease such as cystic fibrosis and or Crones -the latter of two which would be accompanied with other symptoms and likely have occurred for many years-.) Also on the differential are irritable bowel syndrome, absorption and or tumor, mass, and ultimately cancer. Prednisone also has on incidence caused the occurrence of extra mucous in stool, however this is associated with more chronic use. How long had you been prescribed the medication and at what dose.

Based on the multiple possibilities, I think it would be best that you get a formal checkup with a physician for blood and stool testing, with possible CT imaging to assess for any bowel irritation or abnormalities. With the clinical picture described and lack of your history and a physical examination I would do you a disservice by telling you anything definitive. The next best step is to hydrate adequately and consult with a primary care physician.
