Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son had an adenotonsilectomy a week ago but now has the thickest mucous I have ever seen gradually building up on his throat. He does not swallow it and is struggling more at night with build up which is making him sick. It’s very thick and stretchy is this normal?
Most patients experience this problem after tonsillectomy. By observing a few simple measures this issue can be dealt with. For instance, oral hygiene should be ensured; the patient advised to rinse mouth after every meal, preferably with an antiseptic mouth wash before going to bed. Warm saline gargles may also help to clear the mucus from the throat. He may carry lozenges with him containing tyrothricin-an antiseptic, that can be chewed every four hourly when required.
Lastly, adopt side position when during sleep to avoid any mucus falling back deep to the throat. Mucolytics like carbocisteine also help to reduce the viscosity of mucus. After trying these simples measures, he may get relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Syed Hashim Ali Shah
