How Can Thyroid Dysfunction Be Treated?

I am currently taking Armor Thyroid medication for my thyroid disorder. My TSH level is 0.006. I am seeing an endocrinologist for treatment. My PCP wants me to stop taking it. I have lost weight, when I couldn t do anyting to loose weight before. I feel more energetic and better than I have in years. I am torn about what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello. Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic. A low tsh with thyroid medications suggests that the dose is too high and is hence suppressing the tsh secretion by feedback inhibition. This too high dose will eventually start causing hyperthyroidism symptoms like weight loss, intolerance to hot, diarrhea, increased appetite, palpitations and tremors. Mere weight loss is not the effect of thyroxine. It affects all the organs of the body and will Have deleterious effects on your well being. It's recommended to stop the drug for a month or 45 days and retest to see the baseline thyroid hormone levels and start a lower dose if deemed as required. Hope I helped you with your query. Thanks.
