How Can Tinea Versicolor On The Back And Chest Be Treated?

jusr realized in the past few days that my 20 yr old son prob has tinea versicolor. He has had these lighter spots on his back and chest for 2 years. they have increased in number and now spread to his face. I have been reading about an autoimmune disease could be the cause. Can you tell me about that and if that is something I should be concerned about?

Hello
Thanks for writing to us

Tinea versicolor occurs when Malassezia grows rapidly on the surface of the skin. Though the exact cause is not yet known. Some factors may promote the growth of this yeast on the skin, including:

oily skin
hormonal changes
hot and humid weather
a weakened immune system
excessive sweating

Try to us Over-the-counter (OTC) antifungal medications which can eliminate discolored patches of skin. However, you should contact your doctor if these treatments aren’t effective. You may need a prescription medication to control your symptoms.

Thanks
Dr. Tripat Mehta
