Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have Type 2 diebetes and i have not taken any meds for it. I kept my numbers low with diet and exercise for 5 years, this is no longer keeping the numbers low. I have really bad reactions to metforman, the drugs my dr has given me instead is Welchol. Is there other drugs i can use instead? the only other sugestion she gives is insulin.
Treatment of type 2 diabetes consists of diet and exercise and drugs. Diet and exercise are of paramount importance and is usually first to start with.
If sugar is not controlled with diet and exercise, then we add drugs to it or insulin if not controlled with drugs and diet. Though metformin is the first-line drug and we start with it.
However, if you have not a good experience with it there are a number of other medications that we can try before insulin in type 2 diabetes. These include Pioglitazone, glimepiride, sitagliptin and many more.
So we always try drugs before insulin in type 2 DM. You can discuss this with your doctor. Yes if sugar is very high, or if not controlled with drugs we may need to start insulin.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
