How Can Ulcerative Colitis Be Treated?

I have been taking licorice root extract, 15 drops twice daily for one year. I have ulcerative colitis. It appears that it should not be taken long term. I have become increasingly fatigued and my sleep is poor. My colitis is not any better. Is it harmful to continue taking the licorice root?
