Hello Charlie,

I understand your concern. I'm afraid the only treatment for umbilical hernia is surgical repair. I am not sure why your doctor recommended you do sit-ups since doing so would only increase the pressure in your stomach, thus making the hernia worse.
Until you are ready for surgery, make sure you don't do any strenuous physical activity and in case you develop fever, severe stomach pain, a tummy that is painful to the touch, vomiting, redness, constipation and a bulging tummy, you should see a doctor as soon as possible, as these are signs of a trapped umbilical hernia and it can lead to major complications.

Wishing you all the best.
