How Can Uterine Fibroids Be Treated?

i will be 52 in January and started having problems with uterine fibroids in May. I have been bleeding more or less since then. After consulting my gyno in August, she performed a vaginal sonogram which diagnosed the fibroids. My gyno did prescribe birth control to stop the bleeding, however it has not. The bleeding is less but only stopped for a few days. She is suggesting a hysterectomy! My question is should I go forward with the hysterectomy or wait on menopause? The bleeding has been somewhat life altering, but I m praying at my age it won t last much longer. i am taking iron nightly and my level as of September 9th was 10.9. i would also like to know if this is common at my age and if this could be the start of menopause?
