How Can Weakness In The Arms Along With Breathing Difficulty Be Treated?

I am looking for help for someone with post polio syndrome who is now 72, is advanced muscle weakness in arms, legs and neck, and is now having trouble with her diaphram. She won t go to a Dr. & says she can t use oxygen, but would have to go on a ventilator & she said she isn t ready for that. What do you suggest? Thanks! My email is YYYY@YYYY

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hi

Greetings from HealthcareMagic!

Post polio syndrome occurs in patients with previous attack of polio virus. As treatment is very unspecific no need to rush to a doctor.
Muscle weakness occurs in all muscles which were previously attacked by polio virus. As age is advanced symptoms are more aggressive (muscles become weak at old age).
The treatment of post polio syndrome is not specific. It include pain killers, Amantadine and life style changes. Conservative treatment modalities are preferred.

Take Care!
