How Does Malaria Medications Affect On Body Growth?
Hi, I am wondering about side effects of malaria treatment medication. My grandson lives in Uganda and contracted Malaria just before his first birthday. They took him to the hospital (clinic) where he received medication (sorry, I don t know what) and he seems to have fully recovered. However, he has not grown since that time. Is it possible that the malaria or the medication has stunted his growth? Thank you.
Suspicious of tetracycline induced side effect. Since you did not mention the age of your grand son and the name of medicine given to him for the treatment for malaria it is difficult to find out the actual medication responsible for his stunted growth. However, tetracycline which is commonly prescribed to treat chloroquine resistant malaria could have affected his growth as a result of binding of the drug with calcium in the bones as well as teeth. Malaria as such does not seem to affect the growth directly however it may cause anemia in untreated cases.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
