Hi. I have been having sleepless nights and am worried sick. A few days ago, I shared a musical instrument (i.e a saxophone) with an HIV positive uncle of mine. After he played a few notes on it, I asked the saxophone and I blew it. I did not have any cuts or sores in my mouth...(not any that I am aware of). Obviously there must’ve been traces of saliva on the mouth-piece. My question is: is it possible for me to have contratced HIV/AIDS in this manner...? What are the risks of me getting infected in this manner? What would the risks be if for instance there was a small amount of blood in the saliva from my uncle on the mouth-piece of the saxophone....and if had a sore in my mouth...What would the risk be in this case? Thanks for the reply.
Hello Now read this very carefully and you will get the answer of your question. Although HIV can be isolated typically in low titers from the saliva of a small proportion of INFECTED individuals , there is NO convincing evidence that saliva can transmit HIV infection , either through KISSING or through other exposure such as occupational workers ( as you blew the saxophone after the us eof your uncle HIV infected). Saliva contains endogenous ANTIVIRAL FACTORS; among these factors , HIV specific immunoglobulins of IgA, IgG & IgM isotype are detected readily in salivary secretions of HIV infected individuals . Now read this your uncle's saliva itself were full of antiviral factors . Your saliva also contains antiviral factors . Even there is no chance of getting HIV infection by you ,if there is blood on the instrument or sore in your mouth. I mentioned this in detail so that you under stand in better way that you are HIV free. Good luck.
