How Does Severe Pain From The Shoulders To The Wrists Indicate?

I have diagnosed from an x-ray about 6 years ago with calcifying tendinitis. It comes and goes, but for the past few weeks, the pain has been horrible. I have had it today for about 12 hours and just has got worse. It is dull throbbing pain, that goes from my shoulders right down to my wrists. Do you think this could still be the same diagnosis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms indicate a nerve impingement. It could be due to tendinitis (due to inflammatory and swelling in the joint) or it could be due to spinal nerve compression at the level of the neck.

I recommend an orthopedic consult and neurologist opinion, x-rays of the joint and neck, and MRI of the cervical spine to check for nerve compression.

Tendinitis causes pain more when the arm is raised above the shoulder level. Based on these, we can arrive at a diagnosis. As the pain is severe and prolonged, please see your doctor right away for the x-ray and pain management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
