How Does Taking Adderall Affect A Patient While In Surgery?
I take generic adderall 20mg er twice a day. I was wondering, if adderall keeps you alert focused and awake. How does it affect someone who is having surgery and being put to sleep? Like for example, I woke up, took an adderall, then went to get my wisdom teeth pulled out. If they put me on an iv to make me fall asleep. Would that work? Because adderall keeps you awake. I'm not doing this and I know I should stop taking it before surgery. I just want to know what would happen if someone did take it before surgery and being put to sleep.
In almost all cases, dental extraction is done as an out-patient procedure, under Local anesthesia (which does not cause drowsiness/sleep) and therefore does NOT require IV drip to sedate you ('make you sleep').
Under the circumstances, there is no requirement of stopping Adderall as it does not interact with local anesthetic agent.
Even otherwise, the dose of general anesthesia is given so as to produce a certain level of unconsciousness. In those taking Adderall, a little extra dose of anesthetic agent would be required.
