Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Is A Biopsy Test Performed For A Prostate Cancer Patient?
I am scheduled for a biopsy of my prostate after a PSA reading of 6.7 which is double what it was last year. I have requested to be sedated for the procedure. How will the doctor do the biopsy? Will access be via my anus? How many holes are usually poked into the prostate? Wouldn t I know if I had an infection? No fever, no painful urination, but sexual function has been on the decline. (My wife has been receiving treatment for OVCA) now in remission.)
It is usually performed under ultrasound guidance via the anal route. Usually, six samples will be taken.
It is a simple procedure and will not causes much pain. There is a chance for infection after the procedure and you have to take antibiotics following the biopsy.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
