I have chronic pain in my neck and shoulder mostly on my left side, and I have had some weird tender areas that just come and go and then also muscle spasm. I always need at least 9 hours of sleep and sometimes still feel tired. So is it possible that I have fibromyalgia

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for asking. I understand your query. Your pain does not seem to be fibromyalgic for-- - Fibromyalgia almost always causes pain in all four quadrents.. while you have it only on one side. - In fibromyalgia, pain tncreases on touching the part/ the pressure sensitivity of muscle increases.. you don't seem to have it. * If you are still doubtful, consult a neuromuscular specialist , get examined/ investigated & confirmed. - In my view, your pain seems to be vertebral in origin. The sudden pains/ spasms are nerve pressure symptoms leading to muscle pulls/ spasms. Get MRI/ CT scan of cervical / thoracic spine to confirm.. followed by medication/ physiotherapy/ surgery.. as per need. Thanks.
