How Likely Is Contracting HIV After Unprotected Sex With Sexworker?

2 days ago I had unprotected sex with a Chinese prostitute. It was only for a minute or so. Of course I was drunk and not thinking. I am terrified now. I have a wife and kids. Please let me know how likely I am to have contracted HIV and what I should do.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

Unprotected sex with a sex worker is a risk factor for HIV. HIV even if acquired does'nt show up early in the blood work up(window period of HIV is 90 days OR 3 months. Window period is the time from infection when it can be first detected by a test). I would advice that you get a blood test for HIV (HIV combo or HIV duo test, which test for both p24 antigen as well as HIV antibodies. It is 99.8 % sensitive at 1 month). If the first test after 1 month is -ve then it is advisable to get a repeat test at 90 days of the last risky sexual contact (3 months) to cover the window period of HIV.
