How Long A Patient With High Sugar And Heart Attack Stay In Ventilation?

hi,please allow me to give my my dads history, my dad is a diabetic, and also a very heavy smoker, his legs are turning black due to low blood circulation,he has congestive heart failure, and he is in renal failure, his kidneys are failing. i took him to the hospital on 2/06/2011, the doctor said he needed surgery to remove his leg, and admitted him, before they can to the surgery they needed to stabilise his heart; sugar & blood pressure levels, however on saturday my dad had a massive heart attack and was sent to icu. he is still in icu, he is on adrenalin and dobutex.his doctor says they tried to wean him of, he is still reliant on the ventillator. His blood pressure is too low, and if 1 more organ fails, then it will be fatal. my question to you, is this, from a doctors point of view, can my father still pull through and make a full recovery, or will the dotors at some point give us the decision of stopping ventillation, and how long do patients in this case normally stay on the ventillator.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

The fact is that your father had probably a potentially dangerous condition to start with- a gangrene. This means he already had some form of an infection going on.

Then he developed a heart attack. Thats another potentially dangerous condition.

However there is still a possibility of recovery from a doctors point of view, even if slim. As the doctor said if no further complication occurs, he may even tually pull through with it. One would ofcourse need to be very intensive about the treatment though

How is his ABG? is he concious?

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.
