Fever for more than 3 weeks, acute weight loss, malaise and diarrhoea for more than 3 weeks are early symptoms of HIV infection. However, many patients do not suffer from symptoms for a long time despite getting infected. Hence, symptoms are not reliable indicators of HIV infection.

A person should get tested for HIV infection 4-6 weeks ("window period") after unprotected sex with an unknown partner. However, it is best to avoid being promiscuous.
