How Long Can Methotrexate Be Taken?

Good evening, I am currently taking 25 mg of Methotrexate q7d. I will be having surgery to replace my right hip. I am being treated for RA which is also sero negative. Should the medication be discontinued prior to surgery as it is my understanding the medication will increase bleeding and clotting times? I also was transfused in 20056 where I picked up a Lupus Antigen from a transfusion whichhas also affected my bleeding and clotting times. Thank you for your professional advise.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It's not the case with Methotrexate. It is an anti-neoplastic agent with anti-metabolite activity and hence no relation with bleeding. Some medication like Aspirin, Clopidogrel and LMWH should be stopped before surgery because they can lead to heavy bleeding during operation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
