Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Why would my cardiologist keep me on metoprolol for years, even after I had a pacemaker because of bradycardia (sick sinus syndrome)? I ask because recently I had surgery and the anesthesiologist seemed a little perplexed when I told him my meds and my diagnosis.
If you indeed have hypertension, the use of Metoprolol long-term is not an issue. Do follow the instructions of your clinician for the same. He would be able to defend his reasons for the same. The reason your anesthesiologist was perplexed is probably that it causes bradycardia as part of its action.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
