Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How long can a fever last with appendititus and then an appendectomy? My very close friend was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning for pain in his side. He had a fever of 103.7 they determined that he needed his appendix removed, when they did the surgery the appendix ruptured. Today he still has a fever. He can barely stay awake.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Acute appendicitis is associated with fever. Fever associated with appendicitis is due to inflammation that accompanied appendicitis. If fever is still persisting, it suggests that inflammation is still persisting. I suggest your friend to take anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-pyretics (fever lowering drugs) to control the fever and inflammation. Since, the inflamed appendix is removed, fever and inflammation will start coming down soon. The incision site should also be examined for any sign of infection. Infection of the incision site may also inflammation and thus fever. I suggest you to get the site examined by your surgeon.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
