How Long Do Severe Back Muscle Spasms Take To Resolve?

Hello I have suffered a severe back muscle spasm, it is around my left hip. This happened almost 3 weeks ago. My Dr diagnosed very tight Hamstring and hip flexors and prescribed naproxen and a muscle relaxer along with stretching the hamstring. The pain is still there, how much longer will it take to get back to normal. Thank you, Ian

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
Muscle pain might take up to 6 weeks to go away. In your case you will need to make the exercises to help the muscles relax so they are not continuing to get hurt otherwise the pain might go longer. What I would recommend is:

1. take the medication regularly to help with pain and relax the muscle
2. warm local compresses might help
3. do the exercises regularly to help with the muscle relaxation- would be good if a physiotherapist gives you the exercises.
4. This is not the time to do extra activities so try to not over do things or do sports at this time, bed rest is not recommend either so just do the necesssarily daily activities and the exercises the physiotherapist has given.
5. If you have neurological signs like numbness or weakness you will need to see your doctor soon
6. If no neurological symptoms and you are doing the above measures than be patient- time is the best healer.
7. you will need to see a doctor if no improvement in a couple of weeks or earlier if any worsening.

Hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you

Best regards

Dr Antoneta
