How Long Does Acyclovir Take To Show Effect?

I just left the dr. office with a prescription for acyclovir 400 mg and a topical acyclovir 5% ointment. I am at the very beginning stage of getting a large cold sore on the middle part of my bottom lip. It has not yet blistered, but the area has some swelling and some redness. How long can I expect the medicine to take to work? If there is no blister formed yet, and I have started the medication, will a blister form at all? Many Thanks.
